Anyone else dealing with child custody issues... any advice?

I’ve been going through a child custody situation where I stay with my child, but when they go for overnight visits with the father, he uses weed. I’m really concerned about it and have some evidence. I’m not sure where to go from here. Anyone been through something similar? What steps should I take?

Wow, that’s tough. I’d suggest documenting everything you’ve noticed. It might help if you need to take it to court. Have you tried talking to a lawyer?

Yeah, you’ll want to keep track of any specific incidents. If you’re in Texas, I believe you can ask the court for a substance abuse evaluation.

@Kei
Thanks, I’ll start keeping a record. Do you know where I can file for that kind of evaluation?

I’ve been in a similar situation. You might need to go to the clerk of court to get the process started. They can help you with the forms to file for a custody modification.

Oh, that’s really helpful to know. Thanks for the tip!

If you think the child’s safety is at risk, you can also request supervised visits or ask the court to restrict marijuana use during visits.

Yeah, exactly. The court will usually take the child’s best interests into account. Just make sure you have enough evidence to back up your concerns.

Just wanted to mention—if you’re thinking of modifying the visitation agreement, be sure to have as much proof as possible. The more details you can provide, the better.

You might also want to look into any online services or websites where you can get a consultation with a family lawyer to guide you through this. Good luck!
