Can a restraining order affect my lease obligations in PA?

Hey everyone, I’m dealing with a tough situation right now and I’m hoping someone can help me out. I’ve been paying rent for two places since I had to move out of my old place because of abuse from my ex. Now, there’s a possibility that a judge might issue a restraining order against me. Does anyone know if that would change my responsibility for the lease? I’m in PA, and I’ve already filed a PFA against him. Any advice would be super helpful!

Sorry to hear you’re going through this! I think in PA, you might have options for breaking the lease early if there’s abuse involved. I know some laws help victims of domestic violence in situations like this.

@Miko
Yeah, that’s right. Some states have laws that allow you to end a lease early if you can show you’re a victim of abuse. Might be worth talking to a local lawyer about it!

Thanks for the clarification! I wasn’t sure about that part. I’d definitely recommend getting legal advice on it.

Hey, I’ve been through a similar situation before, and I remember the court was willing to make exceptions if I showed proof of abuse. You might also be able to negotiate with the landlord. Good luck!

Thanks! I didn’t even think about negotiating with the landlord. I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Appreciate it!

I know it’s a tough call, but maybe look into tenant rights in PA for victims of domestic violence. You might be able to get out of the lease without paying the full rent if it’s unsafe for you to return. Stay safe!

If you do get a restraining order, it might not automatically end your lease, but some courts allow you to modify the order to get your stuff or leave. Check with a lawyer about your options.

I’m definitely going to check with a lawyer. I just don’t want to be stuck paying for two places. Thanks for the advice!

I’m not an expert, but I think your best bet is talking to a lawyer who knows PA laws. Some domestic violence situations can actually allow you to break the lease early. Hang in there!
