So I’m in a bit of a tough spot. I have a 50-50 custody situation, but my ex isn’t visiting the kids at all anymore and seems to not want anything to do with them. There’s no child support order in place. Can I now petition for child support since I’m basically the full-time parent? Also, what about modifying the placement? And is there any chance I can ask for back support for the time my co-parent hasn’t been involved? I have proof that they’ve ditched their responsibilities.
Yeah, definitely talk to a lawyer about this! You have some solid grounds to petition.
Custody and child support usually go hand in hand. If your ex isn’t contributing, you should be able to get support for the kids. It’s all about what’s best for them.

Exactly. Even if it was 50-50 before, if they’re not involved now, you can ask for changes.
Yes to both! You can file to modify custody if the situation has changed. Just make sure to document everything.
You should definitely aim for the child support. As for back support, it might be a bit tricky, but it’s worth asking. Good luck!

What do you mean by tricky? Is it hard to get?
@BenjaminYoung
It can depend on the judge and the specifics of your case. Just be prepared!
I’d say act fast! The sooner you file, the better your chances are of getting things sorted.
How likely do you think it is to get full custody with all this? My ex hasn’t contacted our kids in months either.

If you have proof and it’s been a while, you might have a good shot. Just keep everything documented.
