Divorcing an abusive husband is tough. While you can technically do it yourself, a lawyer is best:

  • Protects your cousin’s safety during the process.
  • Fights for a fair settlement (money, child custody).

Free legal aid or a lawyer consultation can help navigate things. Getting a good outcome is more important than saving on a lawyer in this case.

While securing a lawyer for a divorce isn’t always mandatory, being well-prepared for the process is crucial. This includes having all necessary documents ready and filing them in the correct court.

Hello, Steve Affie. Going pro se is ideal if you can reach an agreement, and courts are typically quite supportive of it.

Whether you can do it yourself completely depends on your state, and occasionally even your county. Every state has different rules and regulations that influence how things are carried out.

“Do it yourself” divorce is available in our court, but only under specific circumstances. In other situations, the party appearing pro se (self-represented) is ordered by the judge to hire an attorney after the hearing due to procedural ignorance.

It’s rare to do it yourself without running into issues at some point.

I’m not using a lawyer. However, my state requires mediation first. I consulted with a lawyer who said I should be fine to handle mediation alone, but I can go to her anytime if things get complicated.
