I am working with my attorney on this, but I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this or has thoughts on what boundaries can be set. I had to move my kids’ computers to the basement because their Dad was listening to everything in my home through their voice chats while they play Roblox. He comments on things like what we’re having for dinner or even when I tell the kids it’s bedtime. It feels like a total invasion of privacy.
OFW is for communicating about the children, not discussing what you are doing in your personal life in your own home. He’s abusing this tool put in place and created to help families communicate. Glad you are working with your attorney. In the meantime, other restrictions need to be put in place for your peace of mind and psychological safety. Turn the mic off, hard line.
I’ve banned Roblox from my house permanently. It’s a cesspool for predators and isn’t a safe place for children to be at all.
Same. It’s also designed from the ground up to get children to spend money. I banned it with the quickness.
Just shut off the microphone and the camera. It’s a good way to teach them how to type.
No one has said this yet, but you don’t have to use voice chat to enjoy playing Roblox together. Your children can still play with their Dad without voice being involved. Minecraft? No voice chat included. If they are using Discord that is a whole other issue that needs monitoring on what channels and communities they are a part of. You could also try to engage your children by letting them teach you how to play and now Ex can’t do his power play tricks.
Just get a better headset for your kids so that it isn’t picking up everything. The good ones limit background noise getting picked up because gamers don’t usually want their friends to hear their family.
If a friend on Roblox was acting inappropriately on chat, what would you do? You would block them, right? Maybe short term, maybe long term but block them. Ex acts up? No shared Roblox for a week.
Put them inside a sealed foil bag, like this, when not in use. It’s a faraday cage.
I think it’s time to start limiting their video games. It should be weekends, for an hour. They shouldn’t be playing every day.
That’s what the therapist said too… thought it would backfire on me and cause him to say I’m taking him away from them.
Kids’ video game time is supposed to be significantly limited, especially on school days. At least, if you want healthy kids.
Screen time in general… “rots the brain” as my grandparents used to say! Actually, the American Pediatrics Association endorses limited screen time.
How does OP’s situation qualify as ‘invasion of privacy’? So when dad is playing Roblox with the kids, he hears things happening in the background at your house?
Simple fix would be a better headset. We had the same issue of people being able to hear into our home through his headset.
Well that’s definitely not ‘invasion of privacy’ as defined by Indiana law. Can you just get your kids better sound-canceling headphones?
He uses it to interfere with parenting. If he was just listening I agree… but he is twisting things and running to his attorney.
I don’t know Roblox but some games have a way to allow you to play but disable the voice chat. Is that an option?
I would love for them to have a good relationship with him and enjoy time with him. However, he uses anything he can to take me back to court.
