Estranged Mother-in-Law says she has grandparent visitation rights. Anything I can or should do?

Hey guys,

I need some advice.

My wife and I have been married for 4 years, and I’ve never met her mother due to their strained relationship. Her mom has bipolar tendencies and has caused trouble for the family.

Since my wife’s grandma passed away and we had a baby, my mother-in-law has been calling non-stop, claiming she has visitation rights and threatening to come to our home. We haven’t communicated with her for about 3 years and have blocked her number, but she still leaves voicemails.

What should we do? Could she get visitation rights despite never meeting our daughter? What might happen if she follows through with her threats?

We’re in Texas. Thanks for any advice!

Hi folks,
recalling that each circumstance is distinct. To safeguard your rights and your child’s best interests, you must get legal advice.

She does not possess any “grandparent” rights. The grandparent must have a well-established relationship in order for rights to even be attainable, which is not the case in this instance. Until you obtain official legal paperwork, ignore her.
