Help responding to petition for divorce & custody in Kentucky

I need to respond to my husband’s petition for divorce and custody within 20 days, but I can’t afford a lawyer. He left me for his best friend’s wife and hasn’t contributed anything to our 13-year-old daughter since he left. I agree to the divorce but oppose joint custody because he is an alcoholic and abusive. My daughter is afraid of him.

I need guidance on how to properly respond. How do I file with the court, and do I send a certified copy to him? I’m also entitled to half of his 401(k). Any help is appreciated!

Visit the courthouse and talk to the family court administrator. They can guide you on the process.

If he has filed for divorce and served you, you need to file an answer with the court quickly. Check with the clerk for the necessary paperwork. Given the assets involved, consider whether any relatives can help you with legal fees. Document everything related to your daughter’s situation, especially his behavior.

Make sure to clearly state your agreement with the divorce but your disagreement with joint custody in your response. Emphasize your daughter’s fear and his lack of support. It’s crucial to document everything and consider filing for sole custody if your daughter is at risk.
