My daughter has wanted to start cheer for over a year. Unfortunately, we missed tryouts last year. Right now, her dad is forcing her to do jujitsu, which she doesn’t like at all. We have 50/50 joint physical custody. She recently asked if she can participate in a cheer clinic in a couple of months and also try out for a cheer team. However, her dad told her that she has to put in maximum effort at school, especially since she has ADHD, and at jujitsu before she can attend cheer tryouts. I just don’t understand why she can’t play a sport that she actually enjoys.
Who has primary custody? Is it you or him?
It sounds like he’s being really strict about her activities. Have you thought about discussing this with him more seriously?
IDK how courts handle sports specifically, but usually, they prioritize the child’s best interests. Maybe consider bringing this up legally if it continues?
I remember a friend had a similar situation. The court mainly focused on what the child wanted. It might be worth mentioning her interest in cheer to their dad again.
You might want to consult with a family lawyer. They can give you specific advice on how to approach this in court if needed.
