How long does child support process take?

How long does it take to start receiving child support after filing? I filed in Feb, they served him in May, and the 30-day response period has already passed. This process is taking longer than I expected, and I have not been informed if he responded to the summons and complaint. Can anyone provide some guidance?

It took me six months, but by then, he owes six thousand dollars.

It’s been a year since I filed, and I still haven’t received a support order. Every case varies.

In Ohio, the process of serving papers took about 4 months. According to the agency, if I hadn’t contested the proposed amount, my wages would have been garnished in approximately 30 days, allowing time for my employer to set up the garnishment. Throughout this period, I accrued arrears. Currently, I’m in court seeking a fair amount, given that I have equal custody with their mother, yet I continue to accumulate arrears. The timeline for repayment varies by county in Ohio; in my county, it begins two weeks after the hearing or court date, which I’m grateful for. However, in the neighboring county, it starts from the date of filing.

Child support processing time varies by location, case complexity, party cooperation, and legal system efficiency. Typically, it can take weeks to months or more to establish or modify child support.

While most child support payments begin within 6-8 weeks after filing, be aware that there can be delays, and it could take several months in some situations.

Different state different laws. Your all over the place. Your still upset with ex and I can tell because I was once there too in that state of mind. So don’t be upset with me being blunt. I get it, your scared! If he isn’t a good father. Let him fall of the earth by himself. File child support and he might not pay. They don’t do custody in with support. Been there done that. When I did support, judge asked who files taxes with said child? I said me because support isn’t a for sure thing. Ex said he wants to file every year (just to get more money at tax time) judge asked if we were married and I hesitated. My ex was abusive ( broke my nose by headbutting me, that was small VS other things) I was scared but said we are on and off and judge seen my fear. He said, that’s a boomerang relationship. Told ex to sit down. And gave me the right to claim every year and did child support. 7 years later, he never filed with court to get custody and lives his life. Child support isn’t for sure but if Your ex doesn’t pay, let him. If you are scared, live your life. You should have called cops when you found out about your daughter. That would help your case.

Getting a child support order typically ranges from a few weeks to several months, depending on complexities and disputes. For personalized advice aligned with your circumstances and local laws, consulting a family law attorney is recommended.
