Thinking of going through a divorce but without hiring a lawyer. Anyone have any idea what the costs look like? Trying to avoid those big legal fees and wondering if doing it myself would be worth it. Appreciate any insight.
Did this last year. Costs will depend a lot on your state, but filing fees alone were about $200 where I am. You might also need to pay for things like a notary or court fees depending on your paperwork.
@Layne
Thanks, that’s helpful! Did you have to pay any extra fees after the initial filing?

Not much extra after the filing, but I did have to pay for a certified copy of the divorce decree. That was like another $20 or so. Totally manageable compared to lawyer costs.
It might be cheaper overall, but you have to know your state’s process. In some places, there are mediation fees or you might need extra paperwork. Could add up if you’re not familiar with the steps.

Good point. How’d you figure out the steps? I’d probably miss something without some kind of guide lol.
@Crosby
I just used the county court’s website! They had step-by-step instructions and forms to download. Also, some courts have staff who can help with basic questions if you get stuck.
@Crosby
I went through this too. If you’re nervous about missing something, there are services that help with DIY divorce paperwork for a fee. Not as pricey as a lawyer but still a cost to consider.
Doing it without a lawyer is totally possible if things are straightforward. Are you and your ex on the same page about everything?

Yeah, we’re pretty much agreed on everything. No property to split or anything major like that.
@Crosby
That helps a ton! If you’re both in agreement, the process should be smoother, and you’ll probably avoid mediation fees.
@Crosby
FYI, you’ll still need to make sure you’re filing all the right forms even if you’re in agreement. Easy to overlook small details when you’re not used to the paperwork.
Depends on where you are, but without a lawyer, you’re really just paying filing fees if it’s uncontested. Just make sure to have everything prepared so you don’t end up having to redo anything!

True! I’d hate to get something wrong and have to start over. Did you have any unexpected costs when you did it?
@Crosby
Nothing crazy, but I did have to get a few documents notarized, which was like $10 here and there. Worth it for peace of mind.
@Crosby
Can you go to any notary for that, or does it have to be through the court?
If you don’t have any big assets or kids involved, it can definitely be cheaper without a lawyer. Just the filing fees, really. Some places even offer fee waivers if your income qualifies.

Oh, I hadn’t thought of fee waivers! I’ll check if I’m eligible. Thanks for the tip!
@Crosby
Fee waivers are great if you qualify, saves a lot. Usually, there’s just an extra form to fill out for it.
