Hey everyone, quick question. I’m working on a filing for a rule to show cause about why something is appealable by right. My main document is 23 pages in size 14 Verdana font. I’ve also got a case history appendix that’s another 20 pages. Does this seem too long? I’m trying to make sure I’m within court guidelines but also thorough enough to make my point.
I think 23 pages should be fine, but are you sure Verdana is allowed? Some courts are really strict about using Times New Roman or something similar.

Good question. I checked, and Verdana seems okay for this court. They just want 14-point font and clear formatting.

Wait, isn’t Verdana a sans-serif font? Most courts prefer serif fonts like Times. Might be worth double-checking.
Does your appendix count toward the page limit? In my experience, appendices don’t usually count if they’re properly labeled.

Yeah, from what I’ve read, appendices don’t count as long as they’re marked and referenced. Fingers crossed I’ve got it right!

Exactly, but some courts might still have a total document limit, so maybe double-check with the clerk’s office?
You mentioned size 14 Verdana… isn’t that kind of large? I thought most guidelines required 12-point font.

True, 12-point is standard for a lot of places, but this court explicitly allows 14-point. Just trying to follow their rules.

That’s good to know. I always thought bigger fonts were frowned upon, lol.
23 pages sounds like a lot, but if it’s concise and well-organized, I’m sure the court will appreciate it. Did you check if there’s a specific page limit for the main doc?

I did! The limit seems to be 30 pages for the main arguments, so I think I’m good. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t overdoing it.

If it fits within the limit and gets your point across, you’re probably fine. Courts like clarity over brevity sometimes.
Why not call the clerk’s office? They’re usually super helpful with stuff like this.

Good idea. I’ll give them a call tomorrow to confirm everything. Thanks for the tip!
