Michigan FoC support order... can I only pay for medical?

I was served papers asking for child support after 12 years of working together to provide for our son. We have been separated for 11 years. She requested EBT/food stamps, and the Friend of the Court was automatically involved. She claims she only asked for me to cover medical expenses. I have been covering medical for 11 years, so I’m wondering if it’s possible in Michigan to only pay for medical support.

Have you checked if there’s a current custody order or parenting plan established?

No, there isn’t a formal one. Just a verbal agreement about which days we would each have him.

It might be a good idea to talk to a lawyer and formalize a parenting plan to clarify your responsibilities.

I think that makes sense. I just didn’t realize it was necessary.

It’s important to document everything you’ve been doing for your son over the years.

I’ve been keeping notes and records, so I think I’m covered there.

If you’re worried about the support request, make sure you’re ready to present your case.

Definitely. I just want to ensure I’m doing what’s best for my son.

Just to clarify, are you okay with covering medical expenses but want to know if you can avoid regular child support?

That’s correct. I’ve been covering medical and want to know if that can be enough.
