Moving out of crazy MIL house... anyone been through this?

Hey everyone, just wanted to share a bit about our situation. We lived with my fiancé’s mom in Massachusetts for 8 months, and it got really unhealthy. We decided to leave for the sake of our family and got an apartment. Now we’re trying to move our stuff out of her house, but it’s a mess. She let us take a few essentials but said we can’t come back when she’s not around. We planned to come back the next day when she said she’d be home, but now she claims she’s not around. We even involved the police, but she and my fiancé’s family won’t answer their calls. What can we do? We have a baby, and we just want to settle into our new home. Any advice would be super helpful.

Wow, that’s rough! I’d tell the police what’s happening and let them know she’s keeping your stuff. Maybe just go over and take what’s yours if she doesn’t let you in. If she doesn’t like it, tough luck.

I’d get someone she respects to help mediate. Maybe someone she wouldn’t want to act petty in front of. Or see if you can get a lawyer to send her a letter or something.

Dude, that’s messed up! Seriously, talk to a lawyer, document everything, and keep trying to reach out. Don’t let her stress you out. Your family comes first.

Thanks for the advice! What do you mean by document everything? Like take photos or what?

@Davis
Yeah, take photos of your stuff and any messages or interactions with her. Just keep a record of everything.

The police should help since you were living there and didn’t get evicted. Just tell them you’re being locked out. Usually, they’ll make her let you in.

Honestly, in my experience, police don’t break in for personal stuff unless they have a warrant. If you have a key, maybe try to go when she’s not there and bring the police with you. I know it’s frustrating.

@Xen
Yeah, I get that… just feels impossible right now. I hope we can figure this out.
