So my soon-to-be ex-wife has been accessing my Massachusetts Dept. of Revenue account even though I’ve asked her to stop. We separated back in May 2023, but now she’s using info from my tax account against me in court. Is it even legal for her to do this when we’re just separated but not officially divorced?
I don’t think she’s supposed to do that. Even though you’re still legally married, you have a right to privacy. Maybe change your passwords?

Yeah, I updated my passwords, but I’m not sure if that’s enough. Wondering if I should let the Dept. of Revenue know too?

Definitely reach out to them. They might be able to flag your account for extra security. Worth a shot.
If she’s using stuff from your account in court, that could be a problem. Maybe talk to your lawyer about it?

Good call. I didn’t think about getting legal advice specifically on this part of it. I’ll check with my lawyer!
This sounds like a privacy violation, honestly. I’d consider changing security questions too, just to be safe.

Oh, that’s smart! I’ll update those too. Thanks for the tip!
She’s kinda walking a fine line with this. Even if you’re married, accessing your account without permission could get her in trouble.

Exactly. Unauthorized access is usually taken seriously, even in marriages.

That’s what I thought! Just wasn’t sure if the rules were different since we’re separated but still legally married.
If it’s stressing you out, talking to a privacy law attorney could help. They might be able to suggest a protective order or something similar.

Yeah, I might need to look into that, especially if she keeps doing this.
