What exactly is a funeral visitation?

My coworker, who I’ve known for about a year and a half, just lost her dad to a stroke. We’re not very close, and I haven’t met her dad, but I really like working with her. I feel really sorry for her loss. Is it okay if I go to the visitation? I want to show my support, but I’m worried about invading her privacy during such a tough time. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Visitation to support a coworker during a difficult period is a generous act @Barbara, I would advise that, not obtrusive, and can improve working rapport. A five to ten minute visit is ideal, and condolences should be sent. If relevant, share a story about the coworker’s father’s love for common interest.

I’m fortunately not an expert on this, but from my personal experience a visitation is done without the deceased present as is the case with a wake. During those hours the people that come are “visiting” with the survivor(s) and sharing food and reminiscing about the departed. The food and the conversation are considered to be a kindness to those most impacted by the death.
