What happens if the Non-custodial Parent Misses Visitation

Hey all, I’m going through a tough situation with my child’s other parent. We have a court-ordered visitation schedule, but lately they’ve been missing visits without much notice. It’s frustrating and honestly, a little heartbreaking for our child. I know there can be consequences for violating custody agreements, but what exactly happens if the non-custodial parent misses visitation consistently? Is the other parent obligated to make up the missed visits? If so, how does that work? Could these missed visits affect the custody agreement in the long run? Maybe even lead to a change in custody? Should I be keeping a record of all the missed visits, just in case?
Any advice from single parents who’ve dealt with this? Should I talk to a lawyer, or is there anything I can do myself to address the situation?

If the other parent keeps breaking the custody agreement, you can ask the court to change it. The judge might give them less parenting time or require them to take a class to understand how their actions impact your child.

You can ask the court to change the custody order if the noncustodial parent doesn’t follow it. The court may reduce the noncustodial parent’s time or order them to attend a parenting class to learn how their actions may affect their child.
