CPS took my grandson... how do I handle this?

CPS removed my grandson because I had someone staying with me who smoked weed. I got rid of her, and her stuff is gone. I’ve done everything they’ve asked, but they’re dragging their feet. Now they’re talking about changing his school, not telling me much, and saying it’ll be weeks before he can come back. It’s stressing me out so much I’ve had chest pains. My grandson’s mom said she’s willing to sign over temporary custody to me. Does anyone know how I can get that paperwork started?

Man, CPS can be a nightmare. You’ll probably need to file a guardianship petition at your local court. Have you tried contacting a lawyer?

No lawyer yet, but I’m planning to file the paperwork on Monday. Do you know if both me and the mom need to be there?

Yeah, usually both of you need to sign the petition, and a court hearing might be required. Definitely ask the clerk when you file.

If you’re in Oklahoma, you can go to your family court and ask for the guardianship forms. The staff should guide you through it.

Good to know! Do I need to bring anything specific with me?

Bring IDs for you and the mom, proof you’ve been complying with CPS, and any documents they gave you. It’ll help.

Did CPS say why it’s taking so long to get him back? Weeks seems excessive if you’ve done what they asked.

They’re just saying they need more time. Honestly, they’re not great at explaining what’s going on.

Sounds like stalling. Keep documenting everything—they’ll need to account for delays if it goes to court.

Stress can really take a toll. Make sure you’re taking care of yourself too. Chest pains aren’t something to ignore.

You’re right. I’ll check in with a doctor soon. It’s been tough, but I’m trying to stay strong for my grandson.

That’s good. You’ve got this. Just take it one step at a time.

FYI, you can request a waiver for court fees if money’s tight. Most courts have a form for it.

Oh, I didn’t know that. Thanks for the tip—I’ll ask about it when I go on Monday.

No problem! The court staff should help with that too.
