Ex trying to put braces on our daughter without my consent... what should I do?

We’re in Minnesota and my ex is trying to put braces on our daughter without my consent or even talking to me about it. We have joint physical and legal custody, and I would think a decision like that would need both of our approvals. Anyone know what my options are in this situation?

That sounds frustrating. In Minnesota, with joint legal custody, both parents need to agree on big decisions like this, so you’re right to be concerned. Have you talked to your ex yet?

I would definitely reach out to her first. But if she’s already making appointments without consulting you, you might need to get legal help.

I’ve heard about similar situations. You could try asking for the orthodontic evaluations and costs. Might help you understand if the treatment is necessary.

Good point, getting that info could help you make a case for needing both parents’ consent. Definitely worth asking for it.

It’s totally reasonable to tell her to stop until you both agree. If she doesn’t listen, you might need to go to court or talk to a lawyer for help.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. If she doesn’t stop, I’ll reach out to my lawyer. Thanks for the advice!

If she’s ignoring your consent, you could also look into filing a motion for contempt. Not sure if that applies, but it’s something you can ask your lawyer about.

I’ll definitely mention that to my lawyer. Appreciate the heads-up!

It sounds like you’re doing the right thing. You have every right to be involved in decisions like this. I hope it gets resolved smoothly!

Thanks, I hope so too! I’ll keep everyone updated if anything changes.
