Husband served with a TRO... can I legally change the locks?

My STBXH was removed from our home and served with a TRO due to domestic violence. We have a court hearing in three weeks, and I’m really scared for myself and my kids. I want to change the locks to feel safer. Can I legally do this? Thanks!

OP, I encourage you to contact your local women’s shelter. They’ll have a ton of resources for you.

Not a lawyer either, but if you have commingled finances, you might want to look into a legal separation and change the account for your direct deposit if you haven’t already.

Yes, I’d also recommend getting some outdoor cameras for extra security.

I already have some cameras and just added more. I’m terrified and waiting for the sheriffs to remove him. I plan on reprogramming the garage and changing the locks, but someone mentioned I might not be legally allowed to since he’s also the homeowner.

@Adi
That doesn’t apply since you have a TRO and DV is involved.

I’m not a lawyer, but check out this link: https://nhlp.org/files/CA-Lock-Changes-Packet-Advocates-and-Survivors.pdf. This applies if you’re renting. You can have the locks changed if you have a TRO that requires him to leave the home. I couldn’t find anything specific for homeowners, but I think the law would be on your side in this situation. If you can’t get a timely answer, just change the locks to protect yourself.
