My Dad Abandoned Us—What Can We Do?

Hello Peeps,
My family and I are facing serious legal issues after my father abandoned us. I’m 23, my sister is 21, my brother is 18, and our mom lives abroad and can’t support us. Our house has been in foreclosure since 2020, and my father says we must leave by May 31 but it isn’t helping. He also stopped paying our bills and health insurance last year.

My sister has her own place, my brother stays with me while he starts college, and my mom can’t help financially. We’re using two cars in his name, but he hasn’t returned them. Additionally, he used me as a job reference at my work without asking.

What legal actions can we take? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Greetings,

Regarding financial support, since your father is no longer contributing financially, it would be prudent to consider government assistance or community resources. Various programs are available that offer housing assistance, utility aid, and food support, which could be beneficial for your family and your mother.

Hello Nidal,

Since your situation involves abandonment, foreclosure, and financial issues, it’s a good idea to talk to a family law attorney. They can give you advice specific to your case and help you understand your legal options. All the best.

Hi
I’m sorry about what you and your family are going through; it sounds very challenging. For the foreclosure, it’s crucial to understand the process and explore your options, so consulting an attorney could be very helpful. Additionally, since your father is no longer providing financial support, you should consider seeking government assistance or community resources for help with housing, utilities, and food. These programs might provide the support your family needs.

Good advice. Please consider this

Hello,
I’m really sorry for what you and your family are going through. Here’s a plan you might follow:

  1. Talk to a Family Law Attorney: They can help with complex issues like abandonment, foreclosure, and financial problems.
  2. Foreclosure: Understand the process and your options; an attorney can guide you.
  3. Financial Support: Look into government aid for housing, utilities, and food.
  4. Health Insurance: Check other insurance options if you lost coverage.
  5. Vehicle Ownership: Consult an attorney about the cars still in your father’s name.
  6. Employment Reference: Report any unauthorized use of you as a job reference to HR.
  7. Communication with Your Mother: Keep her informed and seek her advice.
  8. Emotional Support: Ensure your family has access to counseling or support groups.
