Navigating custody issues across states... any advice?

I’m reaching out because I’m about to contact some lawyers regarding a complicated custody situation. I have three kids with my ex and one with my husband, plus a baby due in March. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and thought maybe someone here has gone through something similar. I was never married to my ex, but we have a bit of a history. We separated back in 2019 and since then, I’ve been the primary caregiver. My ex has a past with addiction and has been verbally abusive, which hasn’t been easy on the kids. I’ve been doing everything for them—doctor’s appointments, school stuff, you name it. I want to make sure I’m taking the right steps as I search for legal representation.

Wow, that sounds really tough. You mentioned moving a lot; which state are you currently in?

You really need to get some legal advice ASAP. I think you might need to file in Louisiana since there’s already a child support order there.

Have you thought about how your son feels about the situation? He’s only 12, but that’s an age where he might have strong opinions.

I think you need to consult a family law attorney in Louisiana. They can give you a clearer picture of your options.
