Someone trying to skip out on child support by moving out of state… what are the options?

What can you do if someone threatens to move out of state to avoid paying child support? Or better yet, what are the legal steps I can take?

Let them know that child support orders are valid across all states, and every state will help enforce them. Even if they go overseas, some countries have agreements with the US to enforce child support. So running away won’t work.

I’d say they’re not thinking this through. There are ways people try to avoid paying child support, but moving out of state isn’t going to work.

It won’t work. Every U.S. state will enforce child support orders from other states. They’re just delaying the inevitable.

I wouldn’t even bother responding to someone making that threat. Just file for child support where they currently are, and let the state handle it.

As long as you have a court order, they can track them down in any state, though it might take a bit longer. If they try to work off the books, they’ll still face consequences like jail time, having their tax returns seized, or losing their licenses. And even some foreign countries help enforce child support too.

Just wait until a judgment is filed, and they’re eventually tracked down through their Social Security number.

What are they gonna do when they get found? :sunglasses:

Exactly, it’s like the financial police will come for them. :joy:

Assuming you’re in the US since you mentioned states, child support orders don’t stop at state lines. States work together to enforce child support, and the agency will use their Social Security number to find them or track their income.

Thanks for the info!
