Step parent adoption finalized

I’m so excited to share that this past Thursday, the long journey of adoption that took nearly two years has finally come to an end! I adopted my stepkids. It all started almost two years ago when we began discussing legal options with a lawyer. The kids’ former parent had a serious addiction to meth and had emotionally abandoned them a few years before my wife filed for divorce. After the divorce, he disappeared completely, paid no child support, and refused to see the kids. Almost a year after our first meeting with the lawyer, we went to trial, and a few months later, the court ruled to terminate his parental rights. He then filed to appeal, but about six months later, the appellate court upheld the ruling. Two months after that, the adoption was finalized! If anyone has questions or needs support, feel free to DM me or ask in the comments. I’m not a lawyer, but I can share my experiences and lessons learned during this process. It’s been super stressful, and I hope my story can help someone else.

Congratulations!! We are going to court for de facto for my husband! What state are you in? I was looking into adoption but can’t seem to find the paperwork.

Congrats and may the future be good for all of you.

Wow, that sounds like a journey! What was the hardest part of the process for you?

So happy for you! Any tips for someone planning to adopt in the future?
