Steps to Live with Grandparents

I’m 16 and have a strained relationship with my mom, who has been abusive. After a CPS intervention, I lived with my dad in Massachusetts, but I miss my siblings and friends in Pennsylvania. My grandparents are willing to take me in, but I need to know the steps to make this happen while finishing my school year here. What can I do?

If you’re in danger, your safety should come first, even if it means leaving your IB and AP classes. In Pennsylvania, both parents typically need to agree for you to live with your grandparents, or a court order might be necessary. However, getting your parents to agree would be the best route.

Ask your grandparents if living with them could be a temporary solution. You should also focus on finishing your education where you are, then consider moving to your dad’s afterward.

Talk to your school counselor about your situation. They can provide support and possibly help you navigate your living arrangements. Your mental health is important, and you shouldn’t face this alone.

Emancipation is an option, but it’s complicated. You typically need to be living independently and financially stable. It’s better to focus on getting your parents to agree to a living arrangement first.
