So my ex-wife is in the military and is stationed in Mountain Home, Idaho. Lately, I’ve been feeling really low and my mental health is spiraling. She seems to have moved on so quickly, and it’s hitting me hard. My finances are a mess right now too, and I’m considering moving back to Memphis, TN where I can live rent-free and hopefully get my life back on track. But I’m worried about how this move would look legally, especially since I want to eventually fight for primary custody of our kids. I know I should probably talk to a lawyer about this, but I can’t afford one at the moment. Anyone have any thoughts or similar experiences?
Hey, I totally get where you’re coming from. Moving back home seems like a smart move if it helps your situation, but custody stuff can be tricky.

Right? I think as long as you have a solid plan and can show that moving back is what’s best for you and the kids, it might help.
@Ariel
But what if your ex tries to fight it? I heard military families have different rules.

Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about. IDK how military custody laws work, anyone know?
I’ve been through a similar situation. It can be tough, but if you can show you’re trying to improve your life and your kids’ lives, that might work in your favor.

How did you handle the legal stuff? Did you get any help from a lawyer?
@Leo
I tried to get a legal aid service. They helped a bit, but it was still tough. Definitely look into any resources you might have.
You might also want to keep track of everything that shows your stability. It could help later when you fight for custody.

What do you mean by ‘track everything’? Like receipts or what?
@Cleo
Yeah, like any proof that you’re working on your mental health and finances. It could show the court that you’re serious about being a good parent.
Moving back to where you have support can make a big difference. Just make sure to think it through carefully.

For sure. Sometimes family support makes all the difference. Have you talked to anyone in Memphis about your plans?
