So, my wife left me a few weeks ago and is staying at her parents’ place. She took the dog we bought together, and now she thinks she gets to decide that I don’t get to see him. I’m in Canada, and it’s been tough. She keeps mentioning the dog’s safety. I get it, but honestly, the only thing she can really argue is that she took him out more than I did. But that makes sense since I was the only one earning an income. Shouldn’t that matter? The vet bills and microchip are all under my name, so if anyone should be concerned about the dog’s safety, it should really be me, especially considering she has diagnosed BPD and a history of suicide attempts. Just feeling really lost about this whole situation.
That sounds really tough, man. Have you tried talking to her about the dog? Maybe you could work something out?

I’ve tried, but she’s pretty set on her decisions right now. It feels like she’s not even open to discussion.

IDK, it might be worth it to involve someone else, like a mediator or something. It could help both of you communicate better.

That’s a good point. I hadn’t thought of that. Just feels so complicated right now.
Honestly, I think if the dog is legally yours, you have a stronger case. Have you looked into your rights?

I’ve been reading up on it. The vet records and microchip are under my name, which should help, right?
@esleystanley
For sure! That’s definitely a point in your favor. Just keep all your documents handy.
It’s so sad when pets get caught in the middle. I hope you can figure this out soon. Have you thought about getting legal advice?

Yeah, I’m considering it. Just trying to figure out the best way to approach everything.
I feel for you, man. My friend went through something similar. It’s rough but reaching out for help might make a difference.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. Just trying to stay positive through all this.
Just keep in mind the dog’s well-being is important too. Sometimes it helps to focus on that rather than the conflict.

Totally agree. I just want what’s best for him, but it’s hard when emotions are running high.
